Start with user

UI Standards work for users first. Understand the user problem with user flows, sketches, and wireframes before developing high fidelity solutions. Share that work for critique and improvements by looking across the larger ecosystem of NYS ITS before getting to the details. UI Standards benefits the users giving full usability, functionality, and visual appeal of the design.

Keep the Interface Simple

UI Standards is very clear in design language that is used on labels and in messaging. Try to avoid using unnecessary elements and break complex tasks into small logically ordered steps.

Match purpose and feel familiar

The consistent design creates a good impression on the user’s mind. Consistent navigation can guide users to find their most needed information quickly and effectively. Though the first priority is to keep design simple and user focused, OMH standards helps to never keep design inconsistent intentionally that create can bad navigation experience for users.

Usable by Everyone

People with disabilities do not have less needs than anyone else. Everyone should be able to use any tool or application regardless of features or complexity. UI Standards first ensure that our designs must be intuitive and user-friendly—while we can never sacrifice our user's needs, we must keep balance for everyone.
